How to Get People to Share Your Content And Market For You.

Sharing your content is a great way to get more exposure and views to your blog/site, but having people do that for you is an even better deal because it shows they are engaged enough to put in some work to tell others about it.

This essentially has them do the marketing for you and it can bring about a lot of new traffic to your blog/site but having visitors take that action is the hard part.

how to get people to share your content

I’ve created 1,000’s of pieces of content on both blogs and videos over the years and I have to tell you right now that getting visitors to share it is hard. Getting likes is not that difficult, getting comments is harder, and I would say having the visitors share your stuff is just as hard.

Even though it only takes seconds for a person to click on that button, there’s a few things that need to be present:

1) They need to be logged into some sort of  social media account and/or email to make the share happen. Now this is important because sometimes you can do everything right and this obstacle will stop the person who likes your content from telling others about it. You can’t prevent this, so don’t this obstacle bother you.

2) They need to like your writing/video enough to do this.

3) They actually need to take the time to perform this action.

These 3 obstacles are the main things standing in the way of people telling others your blog, but if you can bypass this by doing the things I’m going to show you, then you have a great chance of the share action taking place, getting more traffic to your site, getting more comments, likes and better rankings in search engines (and possibly making more money through this extra exposure).

Here’s 5 things I recommend you do in order to get more people sharing your content:

Like I said before, I’ve been doing this for years and while the minority of my blogs/videos have been shared a lot by people, I have noticed that the times it happened, certain things were present. These things are going to be part of the list I’m about to give you:

1) It is preferable to be an authority figure for a particular audience.

I have noticed that people who are respected for the stuff they write/videos they make generally have a strong following of people who actively visit their site/blog and passionately tell others about it. But you just can’t become that overnight, you have to build up your site/video channel, gain traffic to it, and give the visitors the type of content that will keep them coming back.

This is one of the reasons why gigantic blogs/big YouTube channels which have millions of visitors/views always have a lot of people telling others about it each time a new post comes up. Look at the biggest news blogs, MMA blogs, political blogs, ect… they all have followings and loyal viewers always doing the marketing for the blog by telling others about it, every time.

Another example: Perhaps you’re a weight loss guru who knows how to help their audience drop some pounds. Perhaps your blog gives the visitor advice that works very well for them, so they come back to your site over and over. And this also naturally leads them to share your blog/videos with their friends who also have similar problems.

Now this topic on problem solving leads me to the next tip:

2) The bigger the problem, the more likely it’ll be something you write gets viewers talking about it.

Let me ask you this, on a green, yellow and red scale (with green not being a big deal, yellow being sort of a big deal, and red being a BIG deal, how would you judge the following topics:

Making money online, hair loss for women and dieting? I also want to add that you should look at these 3 topics from a point of view of how quickly do people need solutions for this?

Go ahead, tell me your thoughts on it below, but here’s how I grade them on the color scale:

Green: Diets. The reason it’s green is because people have a general interest in these things so if you post articles on dieting in general on your blog, you’re likely to get less engagement from the audience. You’ll get them reading the blog, but it won’t trigger them to share it much and it’s mainly because it doesn’t hit them at the core.

Now it’s a different story if the diet in question is a popular hit. Then it becomes red, but I’ll explain that in a moment.

Yellow: Making money online. Yes people like to make money, but there’s so many ways you can go about this that people will also generally look at this topic as an informative thing, rather than something to take action on.

Red: Women who are losing hair. Now this is what I call a hungry niche topic. The audience in this subject is absolutely CRAZY about getting an answer as fast as possible.

If you were writing articles on these 3 different subjects, the last, red one is the one which would get the most attention and your audiences spreading that info around.

3) Writing about popular, trending topics is also a great strategy to use in this case.

This is actually one of the main things I had going for me that led to my viewers liking the articles and spreading it around. Here’s some examples:

Popular, trending diets. This can lead to HUGE numbers of visitors reading your blog with deep attention and if they like it, spreading the info to their friends.

Politics. Especially nowadays in 2018. Just look at all the trending topics on Trump for example.

4) Controversial topics.

Yep, these get a lot attention too, and they can often be the red topics I talked about above. The more controversial it is, the more your visitors will want to let their like minded friends know about it. And this can go hand and hand with politics and popular trending diets. You can also include things like celebrity news, big events taking place around the world (sports, disasters, ect…).

5) Being a good, engaging writer.

The better you write, the more likely that the viewers will read it and the more likely it is that they read it = the more likely it is that they are going to tell others about it.

Now being a good writer in the blogging/video marketing world is a subjective thing. In my experience, writing articles that sound like they’re out of a textbook is extremely boring while writing as though you’re speaking to someone in a fun, engaging dialogue is the WAY better way to go here.

Also sharing your personal experiences is another great tip I want to give you when creating content. If you are writing on a subject which happens to be a big problem for people, and you have this problem and/or had it, the ability to relay that experience with your readers is a GREAT way to connect with them and this connection can lead to them wanting to communicate with you and spread the info to their friends.

My final thoughts: Don’t worry so much about making this work, it’s not as important as you think.

As I’ve said above, I’ve written A LOT of articles and made a lot of videos, but I also admitted that most of it was not shared. Does that mean it wasn’t a success? Absolutely not.

I get individual articles that each get 1,000’s of views every single month and these same articles have viewers reading it for quite a long time (I get this info from Google Analytics), and these same articles often don’t get a single share or comment, but still they get sales, traffic and results for me.

It sometimes happens because of the 3 obstacles I listed above and it can sometimes happen because the person reading it too shy or has no time to take the action of letting others know.

But I don’t want you guys to think that a lack of people telling others about your content = a lack of success in this world. It certainly helps, but don’t get caught in the trap of making that your priority when you blog or create video content, otherwise, you’ll focus too much on doing things like going around social media trying to spread your work yourself and that is usually a bad idea since it shows desperation and generally gets little results.

Let people do the sharing for you through the 5 tips I gave you.

Your main goal as a blogger should be the following:

-Providing people with HIGH quality content and that means:

-Writing about your experiences in a controversial, popular topic and writing as though you’re talking to people.

You should focus on this if you wish to get the best results, this is the main point. And I stand behind these points as a successful blogger who has made very popular websites that despite getting a lot of shares on all my work, still get high rankings, long view/read times and make money.

  1. Thanks for some great reminders of how we should be writing. I have to admit, sometimes I do get caught up in SEO and trying to fit my writing around the best keywords. This works to an extent, but I have found that my posts that get the most engagement by far are the ones that come from the heart, the ones that people can relate to; and as you say – the ones that make people feel like you are talking to them 🙂

Thanks for some great tips 🙂

    • No problem Louise! Ideally, if you can fit a keyword with great written together, you’re going to get the best results from SEO, your traffic’s engagement with that content and more!

  2. I really want them to share my posts more and I was actually starting a new blog. I want to talk about a controversial topic but I have got some worries that it can get some hate and I don’t know what to do about it. Do you have any suggestions for me?

    • Well controversial topics and negativity blend together very well Furkan and are pretty much unavoidable. You’re just going to have to be respectful when other people give you negative feedback and show the other people who read those comments that you are the one providing knowledge and patience. In those situations, if your position on the topic is strong enough, the majority of people will take your side.

  3. Hi Vitaliy,

Thank you for sharing. I find your content valuable, and I always get from it helpful information. I’m still at the beginning and don’t have so many followers, but I’ve noticed that when I use a more colloquial language and focus myself more on communicating than on just giving instruction, people are more engaged with my posts. But what about motivational articles, how can they be more engaging?

    • Motivational stories typically get good feedback on their own Marta, I would just apply the existing principal you are using when writing content to explain the story. This should work well.
