If you have a personal website, or for business and you’re new to internet marketing, you need to know how to find the right keywords for your website.
And the truth is many people complicate this process or just don’t understand it at all.
However, the truth is that this task is actually quite easy, provided you have the right guidance. And that’s exactly what you’ll find here!
I will break this training down into 3 steps:
1. Identify your website’s topic.
2. Find keywords for that website’s topic.
3. Identify which keywords you chose get the most traffic and are worth using through an awesome keyword tool!
Note: If you have any trouble with this tutorial, feel free to leave me a comment below and I’ll be more than happy to help you out! So with that in mind, let’s get started!
1. Identify your website’s topic.
Every single website you have is based on a certain topic/s which identify it.
Here is your task for this step: Come up with 1-5 different topics your website is about.
Notice how each topic is closely related to the original topic. You don’t have to make up 5. You can stick to 1, but as long as it is easy to understand and you don’t have to get into long explanations. You want to keep you subject simple because it’ll be easier for your visitors to identify what your page is about!
Think of it this way: If you can’t identify what your website is about, how can you expect your visitors to? Make it simple and your visitors will be happier.
2. Find keywords for your website’s topic.
Now we get to the actual part where you actually find keywords you need. Since we’ve identified what our topics is through step 1, we can now find keywords which revolve around that topic.
How do we do this? The easiest way is to simply use your own logical senses! What do I mean by this? It’s easy:
This is how you do it: Take your site’s topic and think about it’s subject. What would people type into Google if they wanted to know information on this topic?
Let’s take the same examples from above:
Take the diet one. If you website is about weight loss/dieting, what could people type into Google that’s related to your subject? Here’s a few ideas:
- How do I lose weight without dieting
- Weight loss for women over 40.
- How to lose weight without exercise.
- How to lose 10 pounds in 10 days.
- “Enter celebrities name” diet.
Notice each of these phrases make sense. This is something people actually type into search engines. Anything they type in is called a keyword. Even the examples above where I listed subjects are ALL keywords you can use!
Note: Always make sure to use keywords which are long tailed (more than 2 words) and aren’t general.
Example of general keyword: Weight loss.
Example of long tailed keyword: Weight loss for people over 50.
Notice the difference! The second example is more specific and better to use. Why? Because the first keyword is way too general and more importantly TOO competitive to have your website rank for. Stick to long tailed keywords!
In the end your mind is the best tool for finding keyword ideas. Just make sure it’s related directly to your website’s topic. If your site is about diet pills, make sure you look for keywords like:
- Best diet pills 2013.
- Natural weight loss pills.
- Diet pills for diabetics.
Notice each keyword is centered around diet pills. And I just came up with these ideas in seconds all from the top of my head. You can do this too!
3. Identify which keywords you chose get the most traffic and are worth using through an awesome keyword tool!
With the ideas you learned from step 2, the opportunities are endless when it comes to finding keywords. However, not all of them will yield good results.
- Some are too competitive.
- Some don’t get any searches.
- Some get a lot of searches but are too competitive to rank against.
How do you determine which keywords are worth perusing? By using a keyword tool called Jaaxy. It is the best tool I have ever used and it will give you nearly precise information on every keyword you seek, including:
How many searches the keyword gets.
It’s competition (if the number on Jaaxy for your keyword is less than 300, you have a GREAT keyword!).
And more…
Let’s analyze a few keywords we used above through Jaaxy:
Let’s take “best diet pills 2013”. Here is what Jaaxy uncovered (screenshot)…
Ladies and gentlemen, we have ourselves a winner! Nearly 800 visitors a month and a competition (QSR) of less than 300 and a green light means you’re good to go!
If you have a website on dieting, I just gave you an incredible idea to use! If you make a website comparing the best diet pills of 2013, you can make a heck of a lot of money by using this keyword for your website!
Have your own keyword ideas? Try Jaaxy’s free keyword search right here!
Let’s try another one…
Notice the competition (QSR) is over 300. This means the keyword is too competitive. We should drop it and move onto another one.
It’s not recommended to try and make websites that compete for keywords with too much competition. You likely won’t get there quickly and it’s better to chase lower competition keywords and get visitors from that!
Through this keyword tool, you can narrow down which keywords are good/bad and make better decision on which ones you want your website to rank for! This will save you tons of time and money, I promise you!
Putting it altogether:
Knowing how to find the right keywords for your website isn’t difficult. In fact it’s something that gets easier the more you do it. But I highly recommend using a keyword tool like Jaaxy to help you figure out which keywords are worth going after and which aren’t.
Please let me know if you need any help with this tutorial in the comments below. As I said before, I’ll be more than happy to help you. Just let me know what your site’s topic is about 🙂
I hear ya! The cumulative approach to getting rankings make much more sense that trying to rank for something too competitive which will likely take a long time or not happen at all. Keywords aren’t everything though- the fact is that your content is filled with phrases that people might type in and with time, it will all get indexed and ranked. Making more quality content is always a positive!
