When I started in internet marketing and eventually managed to see some kind of success, I still had doubts as to whether or not this can lead to a good career path. While I had my own doubts, I was lucky to have support from most of my family, although I did quite often hear comments about how it may be better for me to get a normal job and to do this as a hobby on the side.
I look back at those comments now and think they actually helped fuel my ambition to make this work and I am happy with this. When people ask me what I do, I proudly tell them internet marketing and even if they don’t know what it is or do and think it’s not “serious”, I don’t really care because if they really did know about it, they would probably be very interested to learn more or even get involved.
There’s a reason the work at home industry is picking up steam. Online searches are rising, people are using the internet more and more for everyday needs, especially the younger generation. I don’t think there will be any decrease in internet usage in the next few decades and that’s a conservative estimate.
If I’m right and that trend continues to go on, so will the opportunity to make money in it. One of my internet marketing buddies from Wealthy Affiliate, someone who has reached that true level of success you hear and see about has always told me things are only to get to better.
He’s been telling me this for years despite my skepticism each time I’d hit an obstacle and wonder if this was it for me. I used to think he told me this to keep me in Wealthy Affiliate, but as I became more and more experienced, I realized the man was and is still right.
A career in internet marketing (IM) vs traditional careers:
IM is not a business for everyone. Many people prefer the traditional route, the one where they go to school, finish with a degree in one field and find a job in it and continue that until they retire. Others start their own businesses and become successful at that.
In those traditional roads people take, a lot don’t make it:
- Lots of people don’t finish school.
- Degrees in specialized fields don’t often guarantee you’ll get jobs there.
- Many people don’t like the majors/careers they picked and if they get jobs, end up hating them.
- People who do find work, often don’t always keep it and especially now, there are a lot of people struggling.
- I suppose another big one is how much they get paid. Lots of jobs pay well, but if you work for a flat salary, very rarely will you get a raise or bonus and if there is a position to rise to, it takes a very long time to reach it.
Even when comparing those cons to IM, the biggest worry people have is if it’s “stable”. My answer is that it isn’t, but neither are the traditional options. You can lose your job at any moment just as much as your internet business can end up failing.
IM can become a stable career if you know what you’re doing and work to keep it intact no matter what happens. It can also provide you with the ability to make more money than any normal approach could. Internet marketers can make more than doctors, lawyers and have a lot more free time to do things they enjoy.
I like this free approach to life. Some people prefer to be constantly busy and in the office, but I prefer to be able to move anywhere I want and work anytime. While I am about a year away from being 30, I don’t think I’ll change my mind about this being a better choice.
As I went through school, I never could find any major that I felt a connection to. Now as I work within the IM business, I feel peace and continue hobbies in other areas which I will then turn into online businesses.
And that actually leads to another great benefit of having a career in this industry: Flexibility. If you have a normal one, go through several years of school and then up not liking your choice or wanting to switch to something else, you may have to start school all over again, pay a lot of money in the process and spend a lot of time to get there.
With internet marketing, I can learn on my own different subjects, become an expert in them and make a business on it. People may argue that a lack of a degree may have people trust me less or not take me seriously and they are right with certain fields, but it is also true that a lot of people who own degrees know very little about their topic.
While I feel there is more flexibility with internet marketing, again, do know that lots and lots of people fail at it. However (again) unlike the traditional career (and if you paid for school), if you fail at that, you’ll have a lot of problems on your head. In internet marketing failure costs you MUCH less and takes up less time.
Even in 2016, with as popular as the internet is, I still don’t believe people consider internet marketing to be a serious topic. I have spoken with many people about what I do and over 70% of the time, they don’t know what it is and even those who do, do not know enough about it to start a business of their own.
That’s why I’m not surprised that there is a general mentality of distrust and skepticism and I really don’t mind it. I enjoy doing internet marketing, it is my career and anyone who wants to learn it should do so through Wealthy Affiliate.
There’s plenty types of people this topic is not for, but for those who want to try something non-traditional, internet marketing is definitely a great thing to try.
